چکیده
In this chapter, we discuss the epidemiology, etiology, presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diarrhea in immunocompetent persons. The features of small intestinal and ileocolonic disease as related to possible causative agents are presented. Additionally, there is an emphasis on specific pathogens, with a comprehensive review of viral, bacterial, and parasitic causes of diarrhea. We then discuss the intricacies of the clinical and diagnostic evaluation, as well as treatment. Specifically, we evaluate the severity of illness, historical clues to etiology, the appropriateness of diagnostic testing in various clinical situations, and which diagnostic tests are clinically relevant. Rehydration therapy is discussed along with nutrition and electrolyte

متن کاملEpidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease among participants of the Millennium Cohort: incidence, deployment-related risk factors, and antecedent episodes of infectious gastroenteritis.
BACKGROUND Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are two pathotypes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with unique pathology, risk factors and significant morbidity. AIM To estimate incidence and identify IBD risk factors in a US military population, a healthy subset of the US population, using information from the Millennium Cohort Study. METHODS Incident IBD was identified fro...

During 1997-2004, microbiologically confirmed gastrointestinal infections were reported for 101,855 patients in Sweden. Among patients who had Salmonella infection (n = 34,664), we found an increased risk for aortic aneurysm (standardized incidence ratio [SIR] 6.4, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.1-11.8) within 3 months after infection and an elevated risk for ulcerative colitis (SIR 3.2, 95% CI...

Gastrointestinal side effects affect ~20% of renal transplant recipients [1]. Among such side effects, diarrhoea is common [2] but under-recognized [3]. Diarrhoea may relate to immunosuppressive drugs or infectious complications. The latter may be caused by one of the usual microbial pathogens that also cause gastroenteritis in immunocompetent patients, such as campylobacter, salmonella or viru...
